Make it Six Straight at Home for Brandon

The Brandon Wheat Kings jumped out to a 3-0 first period lead and went on to a 4-3 victory over the Swift Current Broncos on Saturday night.

Rookie Connor Gutenberg scored twice in the opening period for the Wheat Kings after Duncan Campbell had opened the scoring.

The Wheat Kings outshot the Broncos 19-4 in the opening 20 minutes but couldn't keep up that same pace over the final two frames.

"For me, it started with a power-play early in the second period where he never had a shot on goal, and that seemed to be our mindset in the second period," said Brandon GM/Coach Kelly McCrimmon on CKLQ's post-game show, "We had 19 shots in period one, I think we had eight in period two.  I wouldn't say we took our foot off the gas, we changed out mindset.  We didn't deliver any pucks to the net as the game went on."

Kale Clague had the other Wheat Kings' goal while Nolan Patrick and Tyler Coulter added a pair of assists each.

Tyler Steenbergen had a pair of goals for Swift Current with Lane Pederson notching the other.

Taz Burman stopped 34 shots in his Broncos' debut while Jordan Papirny faced just 16 shots in the Brandon net.

The victory was Brandon's sixth straight on home-ice, and allowed the Wheat Kings to maintain their four-point lead over second-place Prince Albert in the East Division standings.
