Hawryluk Hatty Paces Wheat Kings

Jayce Hawryluk had his sixth career hat-trick in
Wednesday's victory.
Jayce Hawryluk notched his sixth career regular season hat-trick to pace the Brandon Wheat Kings to an 8-0 win over the Swift Current Broncos on Wednesday night.

Hawryluk scored a pair of first period goals to help the Wheat Kings jump out to a 4-0 lead, and scored his hat-trick marker eight minutes into the second period.

“Scored first, then I thought we were winning shifts 5-on-5 which led to power-play opportunities,” said Brandon GM/Coach Kelly McCrimmon on CKLQ’s post-game show, “So we had the 2-0 lead and scored the third and the fourth goals in the power-play, which really changes the game.  That was real key to our start tonight.”

The Wheat Kings went 3-for-6 on the power-play in the contest including two with the man advantage in the first period, and are now 4-for-9 in their last two games since making the switch to a 1-3-1 alignment.

“A  lot more options with the puck, and the guys look to have quickly gained some confidence.” Said McCrimmon.

Jordan Papirny tied Glen Hanlon and Jamie
Hodson for 3rd-place on the Wheat Kings'
all-time shutout list Wednesday.
Tim McGauley, Ty Lewis and Ivan Provorov all added a goal and an assist each for Brandon while Jordan Papirny made 17 saves for his second shutout of the season and the eighth of this career.

The victory allowed Brandon to close to within one point of idle Prince Albert for first-place in the WHL’s East Division.

The Wheat Kings will be at home for a pair of games this weekend, hosting the Regina Pats on Friday and the Saskatoon Blades on Saturday (7:30 p.m. both nights, Westman Communications Group Place).
