'Canes Add to Wheat Kings' Home Woes

The Lethbridge Hurricanes scored three times in a two minute and 31 second span of the second period and went on to a 5-3 win over the Brandon Wheat Kings on Friday night.

'Canes captain Tyler Wong had a hand in all three second period goals for Lethbridge, scoring once and setting up the other two.

In addition to allowing the three goals in rapid success in the second, Brandon was also horrendous in special teams, going 0-for-5 on the power-play, allowing a shorthanded goal and giving up two power-play goals in two Lethbridge chances.

"I thought the things we were trying to do on our power-play were a direct reflection of what we were trying to do 5-on-5, and it wasn't working for either," said Wheat Kings' assistant coach David Anning on CKLQ's post-game show, "Disappointing on the special teams. I thought it was a factor in the game.  I thought they gained a lot of momentum off of not only their power-play goals but they did a good job on their kill, gained momentum off it and scored a shorthanded goal."

Tyler Coulter, Connor Gutenberg and Braylon Shmyr scored Brandon's goals Friday night while Jordan Papirny made 29 saves in the Wheat Kings' net.

The loss was Brandon's ninth in 16 home games this season (7-6-1-2).

"We're not too sure what's going on here," said Coulter after Friday's game, "All we know is that we really have to sort our home-ice record out.  Our road wins are good but this one is just not acceptable."

The Wheat Kings are back on home-ice Saturday night, entertaining the league-leading Kelowna Rockets (7:38 p.m., Westman Communications Group Place).

Chaff...former Wheat King Kord Pankewicz had two assists for Lethbridge Friday and now has 11 points in the last 11 games, all assists...Brandon F Jayce Hawryluk practiced at the Canadian Junior Team's Selection Camp Friday in a no-contact jersey, while John Quenneville was on a line with Rocket forwards Rourke Chartier and Nick Merkley...in addition to Hawryluk and Quenneville, the Wheat Kings also scratched F Stelio Mattheos (upper body), G Logan Thompson (upper body) and D Ivan Provorov (Russian Jr. Team)...attendance Friday was 3,562.
