The Western Hockey League’s Brandon Wheat Kings, in association with Koch Fertilizer have unveiled plans for Military Appreciation and Minor Hockey Kick off Day, to be held on Remembrance Day next week when the 2016 Memorial Cup Host Red Deer Rebels pay their first visit of the 2015-16 season to Westman Communications Group Place.

In addition to hosting a Military Equipment display inside and outside Westman Place, members of the Wheat Kings will be wearing special military themed jerseys for this game. All 2015-16 Wheat Kings jerseys will be auctioned off with proceeds going to the Community Fund of United Way of Brandon and District. This fund supports agencies in the community that make a difference in thousands of lives throughout the year. This partnership is a shining example of the commitment to community on behalf of the Wheat Kings, Koch Fertilizer and personnel of CFB Shilo.

Unlike last year’s version, the Wheat Kings’ Crown logo will be prominently displayed on this year’s jersey. The CFB Shilo crest, which features a stag and the motto “Ad Omnia Paratus”, will be featured as shoulder patches. This CFB Shilo crest is recognized as a symbol of the Army in Manitoba and all Canadian Army units in the province, Reserve and Regular Force, work, live or train at Shilo.

“A special thank you to CFB Shilo and the Wheat Kings for partnering with United Way of Brandon to bring back the Special Edition Military themed jersey auction,” says local 2015 United Way Campaign Chairperson Tara Ashcroft. “Not only does it help an amazing organization but it shows appreciation to the military while supporting the hockey team. It’s a chance to add a unique item to your Wheat Kings’ collection.

“We are, once again, very proud to be part of this effort to help our community,” says Lieutenant-Colonel John Cochrane, Base Commander, CFB Shilo. “We welcome this opportunity to give back.”

This marks the second consecutive year that the Western Hockey League club has produced special military themed jerseys. Close to $20,000 was generated during last year’s Jersey Auction held in November.

In addition to the in game auction, which will begin when the doors to Westman Place open at 3pm, two other jerseys will be auctioned off on the radio during the week leading up to the event.

This Saturday, November 7th when the Wheat Kings travel to Swift Current to meet the Broncos, fans will have the opportunity to bid on Tanner Kaspick’s number 16 game jersey during CKLQ’s play by play broadcast with Bruce Luebke. On Tuesday, November 10th meanwhile, fans will have the opportunity to bid on a second game jersey during the 94.7 Star FM Morning Mess.

Fans wanting to participate in either “on air” jersey auction are encouraged to call (204) 571-8929.

The deadline to reserve a bid on one of this year’s jerseys is Noon, November 10th.

Next week’s game will be the first of two special theme jersey nights to be hosted by the Wheat Kings in 2015-16. In February, the Wheat Kings will again don “Pink the Rink” colours in support of the Canadian Cancer Society.
