Wheat Kings Use First Round Pick on Daley

The Brandon Wheat Kings used their first round pick in Thursday's WHL Bantam Draft to select Winnipeg product Caiden Daley.

Daley is a 5-foot-11, 150 pound centre who had 23 goals and 61 points in 32 regular season games with the Winnipeg Warriors during the 2014-2015 season while adding nine goals and 22 points in 12 playoff games.

"We think he's a really good offensive player...good size, very good skater," said Brandon GM/Coach Kelly McCrimmon, "He's a player that always been one of the elite players in his age group and we think will be a really good Western Hockey League player."

"I bring hard work, a lot of compete and speed.  I'm a player that likes to find his teammates open and can also be selfish some times to put the pucks in the net," said Daley, "I'm just a player that loves the game and works hard every time I step on the ice, gives 110 per cent."

"Getting Caiden Daley in the first round, that was a great start to our draft," added Brandon's Director of Scouting Wade Klippenstein, "We had him ranked a lot higher in the first round but things changed, someone might have wanted a defenceman in front of us or something that wasn't a fit for him and he just fell to us.  That was a great pick and a great way to start our day."

It's the third straight year the Wheat Kings have used a first round pick on a Winnipeg product, choosing Nolan Patrick fourth overall in 2013 and Stelio Mattheos with the first overall pick a year ago.

Brandon had a wait until the 21st and final pick of the first round to make their first selection this year, but McCrimmon feels they still got a Top-10 pick.

"There's different lists for different teams.  Caiden was a guy we had ranked 10th overall so we were anxious when he was available at #15, #16, #17, and you start to get anxoius that he'll still be there," said McCrimmon, "Fortunately for us he was, and we're really happy to add him to our organization."

For his part, Daley couldn't be happier than to be chosen by his home province's lone WHL team.

"I was really excited," said Daley, "It was one of the teams I really wanted to go to because I've heard they're a great organization and the people there so I was really happy that they chose me."

When all was said and done Thursday, the Wheat Kings had made ten selections in the Bantam Draft, two of whom were teammates with Daley on the Warriors in third round pick Rylan Bettens, a forward, and goaltender Brendan Benoit in the tenth round.

Among Brandon's other picks was Medora product Garrett Sambrook in the sixth round.

"We feel the players we landed later in the day were players that we had ranked quite a bit higher in some situations so we're optimistic," said Klippenstein, "I think the thing that stood to me the most today was that every single player we called to welcome to the organization were so excited and so proud to be part of the Brandon Wheat Kings."
