Battle of Kings in First Round of WHL Playoffs

The Brandon Wheat Kings playoff opponent was determined Wednesday night, and it'll be a familiar foe.

The Kootenay Ice's victory over Lethbridge on Wednesday guaranteed that for the third time in the last four years, the Wheat Kings will battle the Edmonton Oil Kings in the post-season but, this time, it'll be in the first round of the Western Hockey League playoffs.

Brandon lost in five games in the second round of the playoffs to Edmonton last spring and, three years ago, the Oil Kings swept the Wheat Kings in the second round.

In both years, the Oil Kings went on to win the WHL title.

The teams met four times during the regular season, with the Wheat Kings winning three including a 2-1 victory in Edmonton January 13th that ended Brandon's 14-game losing streak at Rexall Place.

The opening two games of the Best-of-Seven Eastern Conference quarter-final will take place next Thursday and Friday at Westman Communications Group Place.

Here's the complete schedule for the first round series...
