Ryan Pilon scored with 5.6 seconds left in the third period to force overtime, setting the stage for Brandon’s 20th win in 27 games this season.
“I think the late goal gave us lots of energy,” said Brandon GM/Coach Kelly McCrimmon on CKLQ’s post-game show, “We were fortunate that Jayce had great speed, was attacking a forward that got caught on defence, so he was able to really get right around him and make the play to the net and then Timmy came in for the garbage and was able to get the overtime winner.”
McGauley finished with two goals and an assist in the contest, with the assist being the setup of Pilon for the game-tying goal late.
The 19-year old McGauley now has six goals and ten points in the last four games, and Friday’s performance came despite a change with his linemates and Braylon Shmyr took the place of an injured Rihards Bukarts on the line with McGauley and Hawryluk.
“I thought that Braylon Shmyr really played well on that line tonight. I thought their line was our best line, and I thought Jayce Hawryluk had his best game that he’s had in a while. He had great work ethic and real good speed tonight. Those guys played well, but Timmy has definitely been a clutch performer for us and is been generating some offence.”
The overtime winner as McGauley second overtime goal this month and his fifth game-winning goal of the season – four of which have come in the month of November.
Eric Roy also scored for the Wheat Kings while Hawryluk finished with three assists.
Ryan Graham scored twice and Alex Forsberg had the other goal for Saskatoon.
Trevor Martin made 39 saves for the Blades while Jordan Papirny made 25 stops for Brandon.
The Wheat Kings remain four points ahead of second-place Medicine Hat in the Eastern Conference standings.
Brandon will continue their Saskatchewan road trip Saturday when they visit the Prince Albert Raiders.
