Wednesday's Ranks Well for Wheat Kings

Wednesday ranked as quite a day for the Brandon Wheat Kings, and new import defenceman Ivan Provorov.

The Canadian Hockey League released its pre-season Top 10 Rankings, with the Brandon Wheat Kings being the top-ranked Western Hockey League team and #3 overall in the CHL.

It's quite a lofty ranking for a team that ranks as the youngest in the WHL (at this point) and finished five games above .500 a year ago (34-29-6-3).

The weekly rankings of the CHL’s Top-10 teams are selected by a panel of National Hockey League scouts.

The Wheat Kings seem to have all the elements in place to not only have a good year in 2014-2015, but one of the challenges of being ranked so highly is living up to those expectations.

Time will tell if the Wheat Kings' will.

Ivan Provorov

Meanwhile, TSN's Craig Button released his initial Top 40 players for the 2015 NHL Draft on Wednesday.

New Wheat Kings' import defenceman Ivan Provorov was ranked #21 while Brandon blueliner Ryan Pilon was ranked 40th.

Forward Jesse Gabrielle ais another Wheat Kings NHL scouts will be keeping an eye on this season, and I'd throw goaltender Jordan Papirny into that mix as well.
