Coulter's Four Points Lead Brandon to Pre-Season Win

Rihards Bukarts had the game-winning goal Friday
The Brandon Wheat Kings opened their pre-season schedule with an 8-6 win over the Regina Pats on Friday night.

Tyler Coulter had two goals and two assists to pace the Wheat Kings offensively, while Jesse Gabrielle and Quintin Lisoway also tallied a pair of goals each for Brandon.

"It was good tonight to get off on the right foot for the start of the year," said Coulter on CKLQ's post-game show, "I know it doesn't count for much but it's always good tostart off with confidence."

Rihards Bukarts and Braylon Shmyr scored the other goals for Brandon while Ivan Provorov chipped in with four assists.

The game looked like a pre-season contest, with eight of the 14 goals being scored in the third period and the Wheat Kings erasing a 6-4 deficit by scoring the game's final four goals.

"On the positive side, we did get some momentum in the third," said Brandon GM/Coach Kelly McCrimmon, "As a result, shots on goal advantage which turned into scoring chance and allowed us to come back from a two-goal deficit."

The Wheat Kings scored four of their goals on the power-play while Logan Thompson and Josh Dechaine split Brandon's goaltending duties, with each allowing three goals in 30 minutes of work.

Thompson stopped 19 of 22 shots while Dechaine blocked 13 of 16 shots.

The game also marked the unofficial WHL debut of 15-year old Stelio Mattheos, the first overall pick in the 2014 Bantam Draft.

Ivan Provorov had four assists
in Friday's win
Mattheos had two assists while playing on a line with Coulter and Lisoway.

"He's strong on the puck and, for a 15-year old player, he was able to protect the puck on the cycle.  He loves being where the action is, he goes to the hard areas really well and got a couple of assists on the night and had a couple of good scoring chances," said McCrimmon, "A game that he'll remember for a long time, and one where he would learn a few things over the course of the night as a lot of young guys do."

Brandon will continue their pre-season schedule by visiting the Pats on Saturday night (8:00 p.m., 880 CKLQ).

Chaff...the Wheat Kings reduced their pre-season roster to 31 players Friday, assigned 16-year old forwards Dylan Thiessen and Linden McCorrister to Manitoba Junior League League teams.  Thiessen joined the Virden Oil Capitals and scored in their pre-season game Friday while McCorrister was in Brandon's lineup Friday and was assigned to the Swan Valley Stampeders afterward...the Wheat Kings now have 31 players on their pre-season roster (18 forwards, ten defencemen and three goaltenders)...D Ryan Pilon was attended to on the Brandon bench late in the third period Friday after taking a hard hit from Regina's Darcy DeRoose.
