The Western Hockey League approved a new playoff format at its Annual General Meeting this week.
Following the template set by the National Hockey Leagye, the WHL will offer up playoff spots to the top three teams in each division, with the other four post-season berths going to the next two highest records in each conference
The division winners will meet the wild card teams in the first round, while seeds two and three in each division square off against one another.
The new format is expected to promote regional rivalries in the playoffs.
"We believe the new format is a hybrid of the WHL's previous Conference and Divisional formats," said WHL Commissioner Ron Robison in a release. "This will allow us to feature our regional rivalries in the playoffs and offer the most fair and competitive path to the WHL Championship."
The WHL also announced it will release the 2014-2015 pre-season schedule on June 24th and the regular season slate on June 25th.
Kelowna's Bruce Hamilton was also re-elected as chairman of the board of governors.
