The first overall pick in the 2014 WHL Bantam Draft has officially committed to the Brandon Wheat Kings.
Stelio Mattheos signed a standard education contract with the Wheat Kings just five weeks after being the #1 pick in the draft.
"We had met with Stelio's family prior to the Bantam Draft, so I think we had established a pretty good repoire," said Brandon GM/Coach Kelly McCrimmon on Tuesday, "Certainly, our expectation when we drafted him was that he would commit to playing the league. He's going to be great for us, and I think the league is going to be great for him."
The 6-foot-2 1/2, 177 pound centre had 65 goals and 124 points in 42 games with the AAA Bantam Winnipeg Monarchs last season.
"He's very intelligent, very well-spoken, very mature and the one thing that comes across when you spend time with him is that he's really humble," said McCrimmon, "He knows he's got lots of work ahead of him. This is only the start of the journey, and he's going to do everything he can to hold up his end of the bargain and make himself the best player he can be."
The 15-year old Mattheos isn't eligible to play full-time in the Western Hockey League until the 2015-2016 season.
Chaff...Friday is the Wheat Kings' early bird season ticket deadline. As of Tuesday, the club had sold 1,411 season tickets, more than 200 more than they had at this same time a year ago.
