Wheat Kings Get First Look at Mattheos

Stelio Mattheos (center) was the first overall pick in
the 2014 WHL Bantam Draft
Stelio Mattheos stepped on the ice for the first time as a Brandon Wheat King on Friday as the club began its three-day Prospects Camp.

The first overall pick in the 2014 WHL Bantam Draft will only be taking part in non-contact drills this weekend as the continues to recover from a shoulder injury suffered at the Western Canadian Bantam Championship in early April.

The fact he won't be performing at this peak on the ice isn't a big deal, as the Prospects Camp is as much about getting to know the organization and fellow prospects as it is about what happens on the ice.

"Definitely want to just makes some relationships this weekend with coaches, players, the trainers," said Mattheos on Friday, "Guys have made a point of introducing themselves to me and they really made me feel welcome.  You can tell this team is like a family, and that's how it should be."

A total of 27 prospects are taking part in the camp, including ten of the 11 players Brandon selected in the 2014 Draft earlier this month.

The only exception is Minnesota product Mikey Anderson.

The number of players meant several current members of the Wheat Kings also skated in the two practice sessions on Friday, including Jesse Gabrielle, Tyler Coulter, Braylon Shmyr and Brett Kitt.

"There's a lot of really great players on the ice," said Mattheos, "I definitely look up to the guys on the Wheat Kings and being on the ice with them shows you how much work you need to do to get to that next level."

The Wheat Kings' Prospects Camp continues Saturday with a 4-on-4 game that begins at 8:30 a.m., and concludes with an Intrasquad game Sunday morning at 9 a.m..

All the on-ice sessions take place at Westman Communications Group Place.

Chaff...another notable absentee from Prospects Camp is defenceman T.J. Brown, Brandon's fourth round pick in the 2013 Bantam Draft...Wheat Kings' F Quintin Lisoway was cut for several stitches after taking a shot in the face during the goaltender session on Friday afternoon.

Dakota Boutin, the OT hero for the Prince Albert Mintos
at the 2014 Telus Cup, was a third round pick of
Brandon in the 2012 Bantam Draft.
