Pilon Set for Brandon Debut

Newcomer Ryan Pilon practiced with the Wheat Kings for the first time on Monday and is expected to make his Brandon debut Tuesday night when the club opens a four-game road trip in Swift Current.

The 17-year old was acquired from Lethbridge as part of a five-player deal on Saturday that also saw the Wheat Kings acquire prospects Colt Conrad in exchange for Nick Walters, Taylor Cooper and prospect Tanner Browne.

"I was super excited.  I was open to go to anywhere but to come to Brandon, it's really exciting with the backend they got here, playing under Pulock and Roy just to name a couple of names off," said Pilon after Monday's practice, "With the development and the Bantam Draft they had last year, it looks very promising for us."

Pilon's acquisition came just 11 days after the Duck Lake, Saskatchewan product had requested a trade away from Lethbridge back on November 5th.

I asked Pilon how he came to that decision.

"It was very frustrating for me, in all situations," said Pilon, "When we made this decision, we just looked at it as being better for my career, development-wise, to come to a better situation so I'm really excited to be here now."

The 6-foot-2, 212 pound Pilon also pointed to the opportunity to learn from a player like Wheat Kings' captain Ryan Pulock as a tremendous opportunity.

"Pulock's one of the players I look up in the league.  He's an amazing player, so getting to play alongside of him is going to be unreal," said Pilon, "I'm just going to be a sponge and take in as much as I can."

Pilon partnered with 20-year old defenceman Rene Hunter for most of the drills in Monday's practice while Eric Roy moved into the slot beside Pulock on the Wheat Kings' top pairing.
