Honey of a Start for Wheat Kings

Curtis Honey stopped 76 of 80 shots in helping Brandon sweep
Moose Jaw in their season-opening home-and-home series
The Brandon Wheat Kings completed a sweep of their season-opening home-and-home series with the Moose Jaw Warriors Saturday night with a 3-1 victory.

Taylor Cooper followed up his opening night hat-trick by opening the scoring late in the first period while John Quenneville and Chad Robinson also scored for Brandon.

Goaltender Curtis Honey also played a big role in Saturday's victory, making 40 saves including 21 in the third period.

Honey said on CKLQ's post-game show that it didn't feel like a game where he faced 40-plus shots.

"I think that's just part of Moose Jaw putting pucks on the net from the points there," said Honey, "We kept the shots to the outside, and I think we had some really high quality scoring chances."

Honey came within three minutes and 43 seconds of recording his second career shutout, surrending a power-play goal to Moose Jaw's Brayden Point late in the third period.

Eric Roy added three assists for the Wheat Kings as Brandon opens a season with a 2-and-0 record for the fifth time in the last seven years.

"You want to have a good start and for me and for the team, it's big, it just gives us that confidence" added Honey, "It a real good taste of what it's like to win in this league so some of the younger guys.  I think it'll be key moving forward."

The Wheat Kings are idle until next Friday, when they open a weekend doubleheader in Prince Albert.
