Wheat Kings' GM/Coach on CKLQ's Feedback Program

Brandon Wheat Kings' GM/Coach Kelly McCrimmon joined me on CKLQ's Feedback Program today.

It's been an off-season of change for the Wheat Kings, with McCrimmon returning as the head coach to go along with his duties as General Manager and Governor.

One of the questions asked of McCrimmon via Twitter was whether being owner/GM and coach is spreading resources too thin for the season?

"I really feel it depends a lot on the people that you have around you. I feel we've got great support on the hockey operations side of our business, and I think we've got great support on the business side of our operation," said McCrimmon, "Without that, I don't think you could do it."

McCrimmon added that there will be a lot of responsibility falling to his assistant coaches, which was also the case when he coached the team for seven seasons from 2004 to 2011.

The Wheat Kings will open their 2013 training camp on August 28th as they look to put a their first non-playoff season in 13 years behind them.

McCrimmon says one of the keys to getting back to being a playoff team is cutting back on their goals against.

"When I look at our team coming back, the biggest area of improvement that we need immediately is to be a lot better defensively," said McCrimmon, "We need to be responsible in our own end first and, if we can do those things, we're going to have the puck more and, offensively, that's the type of game that we want to play."

The Wheat Kings' surrendered 284 goals last season, their highest total since the 1991-1992 season.
