Winterhawks Edge Wheat Kings

Corbin Boes stopped 41 shots Friday
The Brandon Wheat Kings suffered their first home loss of the season Friday night, dropping a 2-1 decision to the Portland Winterhawks.

Alex Shoenborn's first career WHL goal with just under eight minutes left in the second period snapped a 1-1 tie while Derrick Pouliot also scored for Portland.

The Winterhawks outshot Brandon 43-19 and pushed the pace of the contest throughout.

"We had some opportunities to put some pucks on the net, we had some power-plays at key times during the game where we maybe should have made a little bit more of a statment," said Brandon coach Dwayne Gylywoychuk on 880, CKLQ's post-game show, "I think we could have been a little bit more patient on offence tonight as well."

Richard Nejezchleb scored his first career WHL goal in a losing cause for Brandon while Corbin Boes stopped 41 shots in the Wheat Kings' net.

It was a nice bounce-back game for the third-year netminder after allowing six goals in two periods last Saturday in Moose Jaw, and entering the game with a 4.91 GAA and .832 SPCT in four starts.

"I think after my start to the season, I just wanted to go back to basics, do some simple movement drills and stop the puck," said Boes on 880 CKLQ's post-game show, "I was a hard week of practice, I knew I had to work hard to get back to where I want to be.  Fortunately, the results were there tonight but, unfortunately, there was no win."

The loss was Brandon second in a row after starting the season with four straight victories.

The Wheat Kings will try to break their two-game slide when they host Red deer on Saturday night (7:35 p.m., Westman Communications Group Place). a battle of two top prospects for the 2013 NHL Draft, Brandon's Ryan Pulock and Portland's Seth Jones put on similar statlines -- each failed to garner a point with Jones being +1 and Pulock being even...there were an estimated 30-40 NHL scouts in attendance at Friday's contest along with TSN Scouting Guru Craig Button...Brandon scratches Friday were D Colton Waltz, D Riley Van Horne, F John Quenneville, F Geordie Maguire and F Taylor Cooper.  All were healthy scratches...Brandon has now lost four in a row versus the Winterhawks.
