Wheat Kings Pick Up Robinson from Rebels

Chad Robinson
The Brandon Wheat Kings have acquired Minnedosa product Chad Robinson from the Red Deer Rebels for a conditional seventh round pick in the 2014 Western Hockey League Bantam Draft.

The 19-year old Robinson had one goal and two points in nine games this season after scoring eight goals and 36 points in 67 games with Red Deer in 2011-2012.

“With the injury to Jason Swyripa, that takes a forward out of our 19-year old age group so that’s an area we needed to be a little bit deeper,” said Brandon GM Kelly McCrimmon on Monday, “Chad’s a three-year player in the league, we think his experience is going to helpful to our team and we think, for Chad, a fresh start in Brandon will be good for his career.”

The former Yellowhead Chief looked somewhat buried on the Rebels’ depth chart during their visit to Brandon earlier this month and really comes as no surprise to me that Red Deer was looking for move him this season.

“Red Deer made a number of moves so they’re obviously looking to change the makeup of their roster somewhat, and sometimes guys like Chad get caught in that,” said McCrimmon, “In our case, it’s just the opposite. We think we have a good opportunity for him, and we think he’ll fit in well with our team and be a good contributor."

Robinson is expected to join the Wheat Kings in Victoria late today and should make his Brandon debut on Tuesday night when the Wheat Kings take on the Victoria Royals.

“He’s able to kill penalties, and that’s an area of our team where we’ve really struggled,” added McCrimmon, “Depth up the middle of the ice, he skates well and, we think, can play centre. With our youth, he’s a guy that been in all these situations before."

Robinson’s addition pushes the Wheat Kings’ roster back up to 24 players – two goaltenders, eight defencemen and 14 forwards.
