Gylywoychuk: Wheat Kings Taught Lesson

The Moose Jaw Warriors scored four times in a three minute and 42 second span of the second period and went on to a 7-1 victory over the Brandon Wheat Kings in Western Hockey League pre-season action Friday night.

Winnipeg product Travis Brown scored twice while Brayden Point and Torrin White had a goal and an assist each for the Warriors, who went 2-for-11 on the power-play and scored a third goal just two second after a Wheat Kings' penalty ended.

"We got a lesson tonight in how hard you have to work in the Western Hockey League every night," said Wheat Kings' coach Dwayne Gylywoychuk on CKLQ's post-game show, "We got behind, we started being lazy and being on the wrong side of pucks, we took some penalties and when you take penalties and get scored on, we took undisciplined penalties and, before you know it, you've dug yourself a deep hole."

The wheels fell off for the Wheat Kings thanks to undisciplined play in the second half of the second period, which resulted in Moose Jaw getting seven power-plays in the span of about nine minutes.

Aside from penalty trouble, Gylywoychuk also felt they simply turned the puck over way too much.

"We lost puck battles down low where we'd get a puck and then lose a puck battle again," said Gylywoychuk, "It just seemed right from the get-go that they wanted the puck more, especially in our zone, and then when we did get the puck out, we turned somes pucks over in the neutral zone."

Eric Roy scored the lone goal for the Wheat Kings as they fell to 1-2-0-0 in the pre-season.

Curtis Honey stopped 17 of 19 shots in the first 33 minutes of the contest while rookie Jordan Papirney allowed three of the first five shots to go in and finished with 12 saves.

Brandon will visit Moose Jaw to conclude their pre-season schedule on Saturday night (7:30 p.m., 880 CKLQ).

Chaff...rookie F Jayce Hawryluk (concussion) is presumed to be the lone injury scratch for the Wheat Kings F Tyrel Seaman sat out his one-game suspension. Other sitters included G Corbin Boes, D Ryan Pulock, D Tyler Yaworski, F Nick Buonassisi, F Quinton Lisoway, F Geordie Maguire, F Taylor Cooper, F Hunter Smith and F Alessio Bertaggia...Boes is expected to play the entire game in Moose Jaw on Saturday night...Brandon product Joel Edmundson had one assist and was +3 on the Warriors' blueline...plenty of players with Brandon connections being assigned to the AHL Friday in advance of the NHL lockout. Among them were Travis Hamonic, Scott Glennie, Matt Calvert, Kevin Sundher, Michael Ferland and Carson McMillan while Brandon product Alex Plante was placed on waivers by Edmonton for the purpose of sending him to the AHL...had some computer troubles on Friday night which, among other things, prevented me from tweeting during the game. Hope that is rectified by Saturday night's contest.
