WK's Open Camp Under 1st-Year HC

The Brandon Wheat Kings opened their 2012 training camp today under first-year head coach Dwayne Gylywoychuk.

After nine years as an assitant coach, this is Gylywoychuk's first training camp as the top man and he was eager to get started.

"We've sat around the last few weeks and getting prepped and you're thinking about this and thinking about that but the bottom line is that when you see the players start rolling into town, it hits you again," said Gylwoychuk on Monday, "You realize that it's hockey season, you realize that you're the head coach.  Put those things together its gets you excited and eager to get going."

Close to 70 rookies registered for Rookie Camp on Tuesday night, with the players split into three teams for scrimmages and practices over the next couple of days.

There's no doubt there'll be a close eye for the incoming group of forwards as the Wheat Kings have
just one returnee who registered more than 20 points last season.

"The think about junior hockey, there's always younger guys that are dying for an opportunity and this year is going to be a prime example," said Gylywoychuk, "We've got a lot of young guys coming in that want to stay here for the year, that want to come in and show that deserve to be a Brandon Wheat King and it'll be interested to see how that unfolds in training camp and then into the pre-season. There's also some veterans that are dying for the change to be the guy to be counted on."
