Day One of Rookie Camp Concludes

The opening day of Brandon Wheat Kings' Rookie Camp has come to a close at Westman Communications Group Place.

In Wednesday night's game, Team Gold built up a 4-0 lead and then hung on for an exciting 8-7 victory over Team White.

Hunter Smith scored three times and Tim McGauley added two goals and five points to lead the Gold, who managed to gain a split in their 2-game scrimmage series on day one of Camp.

Dallas Starodub added a goal and two assists for the Golds, who lost 9-4 to Team Black in Wednesday's early game.

15-year old center Braylon Shmyr, who was Brandon's first round selection (12th overall) in this year's bantam draft, scored goals in each of Wednesday's game and showed flashes of brilliance on a number of occasions.

In Wednesday's early game, 17-year old Geordie Maguire of Winnipeg scored twice and set up another in leading Team Black. A former fifth round draft choice of the Everett Silvertips, the Wheat Kings obtained the playing rights to Maguire earlier this summer in exchange for 20-year old netminder Brandon Anderson.

Jason Miller added two goals for the Blacks, who will face off against Team White at 10:30 Thursday morning.

Rookie Camp will conclude Thursday night at 6 p.m., setting the stage for the WHL club's Main Camp, which is scheduled to begin on Friday morning.

All on ice sessions at Westman Place are open to the public.

Close to seventy prospects, including most of Brandon's recent bantam draft picks, are attending this week's Rookie Camp.

This year's 5-day Camp will wrap up Sunday afternoon with the annual Intrasuad Game at 2 p.m.
