Wheat Kings NHL Draft Stats

Wade Redden was chosen 2nd overall in the 1995 NHL Draft
The Brandon Wheat Kings hope to have a player chosen in the NHL Draft for the eighth straight year this weekend.

However, that isn't likely to happen Friday night when the first round takes place in Pittsburgh.

Rounds 2-7 will be held Saturday and it could be a similar situation to last year when Jordan Fransoo was a seventh round selection of the Ottawa Senators.

This year marks the 50th NHL Draft and here's a breakdown of how the Wheat Kings have faired in the draft over the years.

Wheat Kings' Draft Stats

Total Players Drafted: 104

1st Round: 16
2nd Round: 12
Rounds 3-4: 25
Rounds 5-7: 29
Rounds 8 or later: 21

Played in NHL: 32
(30.8 per cent of players drafted from the Wheat Kings go on to play at least one NHL game)

Played 500+ Games in NHL: 13
Note: Jordin Tootoo at 486 following 2011-2012 season.

- The first Wheat King ever chosen in the NHL Draft was Ken Hicks, who went third overall to Oakland in 1967. The Wheat Kings were still playing in the MJHL at that time, joining the WHL the following season.

- Wade Redden was chosen second overall in 1995, the highest for any Wheat Kings' player. Ironically, Redden never played a game for the team that draft him second overall (NY Islanders). They dealt him to Ottawa in a package for 1995's #1 overall pick, Bryan Berard.

- The lowest Wheat Kings' player chosen also went on to play in the NHL. Ryan Craig was the 255th overall pick (8th Round) in 2002 by the Tampa Bay Lightning.

- Current Winnipeg Jets' GM Kevin Cheveldayoff was chosen from the Wheat Kings by the New York Islanders 16th overall in 1988.

- The Wheat Kings still hold NHL records for most players selected in the first round in one draft (Four, 1979) and most player chosen in one draft (Ten, 1979). Brandon's picks that year:

1st Round
9. Laurie Boschman (Toronto)
14. Brian Propp (Philadelphia)
15. Brad McCrimmon (Boston)
18. Ray Allison (Hartford)

2nd Round
23. Mike Perovich (Atlanta)

4th Round
77. Don Gillen (Philadelphia)
80. Tim Lockridge (NY Islanders)

5th Round
96. Brad Kempthorne (Atlanta)

6th Round
120. Rick Knickle (Buffalo)
123. David McDonald (Hartford)
