Wheat Kings Set for Final Week

Ryley Miller
The Brandon Wheat Kings open the final week of their regular season Wednesday night when they entertain the Moose Jaw Warriors (7:00 p.m., Westman Communications Group Place).

The Wheat Kings are looking for a strong finish over their final three games that could not only move the club out of eighth-place in the Eastern Conference standings, but also have them valuable preparation for the post-season.

"We'd like to move up in the standings and do the best we can and finish off the season with the most points we can get," said Brandon blueliner Ryley Miller after Tuesday's practice, "There's always room for improvement but right now we're playing pretty good...I think we're ready to go."

Wednesday's matchup with Moose Jaw is a possible first round playoff preview, though the Warriors are just one of four possible first round opponents for the Wheat Kings.

Brandon could also play Edmonton, Medicine Hat or Calgary, depending on how they finish the season.

Whomever the Wheat Kings play, Miller says they're already getting some experience with some playoff-type games over the past couple of weeks.

"It's starting to be more like playoff hockey, getting everybody ready for it," said Miller, "It's getting exciting."

The Wheat Kings would also like to get a little healthier this week.

The team had seven players miss practice Tuesday including captain Mark Stone and fifth-year defenceman Brodie Melnychuk, who are both expected to play Wednesday.

F Kevin Sundher, F Dylan Kuczek, D Rene Hunter and F Daniel Asham are the other four players in the injury list and none of them practiced on Tuesday.

Chaff...Brandon is 2-5-0-0 against the Warriors this season including three losses on home ice...Brandon product and St. Louis Blues' draft pick Joel Edmundson has three goals, 20 points and a +8 rating in 53 games with Moose Jaw this season...Wednesday night is Rain Check Night. Fans can exchange any unused tickets (from December 16th, 2011 to March 10th, 2012) at the Keystone Centre box office for a free ticket to this game (regular Ticketmaster agency fees apply)...Wednesday's game also features the Pucks for Pets Ball Toss for a Toonie in support of the Brandon Humane Society.
