Wheat Kings Rally for Victory in Swift Current

Mark Stone had two goals and three assists to pace the Brandon Wheat Kings to a 6-3 win over the Swift Current Broncos on Saturday night.

Ryan Pulock and Michael Ferland added a goal and two assists each in helping the Wheat Kings overcame a 3-1, second period deficit in what was one of Brandon’s more impressive performances in the last six weeks.

“We were okay early on, and we just didn’t get a couple of bounces go our way and I thought they made it 3-1, but we stayed with it all night,” said Wheat Kings’ assistant coach Darren Ritchie on CKLQ’s post-game show, “I really give our guys a lot of credit tonight. They stuck with it, it was always positive on the bench and (Brandon Anderson) made some saves after it was 3-1. Our guys just stuck with it tonight and found a way.”

Brodie Melnychuk scored the game-winning goal in his 300th career game with the Wheat Kings, snapping a 3-3 tie 2:55 into the third period while Darian Dziurzynski added an empty-net goal for Brandon for his first points in eight games.

Anderson finished with 28 saves in his first start in two weeks while Jon Groenheyde made 30 saves in the Swift Current net.

Levi Bews, Colby Cave and Taylor Vause scored the goals for the Broncos.

The victory was Brandon’s fifth in their last nine road games and lifted the Wheat Kings to a four-point lead over ninth-place Red Deer in the chase of the final playoff spot in the WHL’s Eastern Conference.

Brandon is idle until Wednesday, when they’ll visit the Regina Pats.

Chaff…Melnychuk is the 8th player to play 300 games with Brandon, joining current Wheat Kings’ assistant coach Dwayne Gylywoychuk, Lance Monych, Tim Konsorada, Aaron Goldade, Dale McMullin, Ryan Craig and Randy Ponte …Melnychuk and Pulock both finished the game with +4 ratings…a pair of Wheat Kings’ prospects will play in the Alberta Midget Hockey League All-Star game on Sunday. Taylor Cooper (Sherwood Park) and John Quennville (SSAC Athletics) will both play for the Dodge Division team on Sunday. Cooper is currently sixth in the AMHL in scoring with 19 goals and 43 points in 30 games while Quenneville has 12 goals and 27 points in 27 contests.
