Wheat Kings Hit Rough Patch

Brenden Walker
The Brandon Wheat Kings have hit their first real rough patch of the season.

Moose Jaw scored three unanswered third period goals to beat the Wheat Kings 7-6 Friday night, handing Brandon their third loss in the last four games.

Shayne Gwinner and Cody Beach scored goals 47 seconds apart in the final four minutes of the third period to help Moose Jaw to the victory.

"We had some very good moments, and completely fell apart in the third period," said Brandon coach Cory Clouston on CKLQ's post-game show, "We didn't get any saves early on in the game but we did a good job of battling back. They came on strong, we took penalties and we didn't continue with the game plan."

The Wheat Kings have given up 24 goals and 165 shots in the last four games and have surrendered 98 goals in 27 games this season -- with the 3.56 goals against average that ranks 14th in the Western Hockey League.

"We just have to block out. We have to make sure we have a guy in the D Zone," said Brandon centre Brenden Walker, "You have to be strong, you have to battle. I'm playing centre now and I have to get better at little things. Everyone has to contribute in the D Zone...that's what's killing us right now."

Walker and Mark Stone had a goal and two assists each for the Wheat Kings while Michael Ferland, Eric Roy, Jens Meilleur and Jordan Fransoo also scored for Brandon.

The Wheat Kings look to bounce back Saturday night when they visit Moose Jaw to close out the home-and-home series (6:30 p.m., CKLQ).

Chaff...Brandon F Tyrel Seaman left the game late in the second period with what appeared to be a shoulder injury and did not return...Stone's power-play goal extended his goal streak to eight games, his second eight-game goal scoring streak this season...Alessio Bertaggia saw his four-game goal scoring streak end but had an assist to extend his point streak to five games...F Paul Ciarelli is slated to play in his 200th career WHL game on Saturday night.
