Pulock Added to Team WHL

It took a while, but Brandon Wheat Kings’ defenceman Ryan Pulock will get a chance to showcase his talents in the Subway Super Series next week.

Pulock was named as an replacement to Team WHL on Wednesday, taking the spot of Moose Jaw blueliner Morgan Rielly, who suffered an injury this past weekend.

The Grandview, Manitoba product is currently tied with Swift Current’s Reece Scarlett for most points for a defenceman in the WHL with 20, including six goals, and is also among the league-leaders with a +13 rating.

“It’s a great opportunity. I’m excited to go there and play against those guys because there is a lot of talent there,” said Pulock prior to Wednesday’s game in Prince Albert, “I wasn’t too worried about it. It definitely would have been nice when it first happened but now that it’s happened, I’m definitely happy about it.”

“It’s a positive for him, and something he should feel proud about,” said Brandon coach Cory Clouston, “In the big scheme of things, it’s not overly important as far as not being named and then being added. If he goes there and has a strong game, he’ll make a good showing and it’ll be positive for him. Whether they’re looking at a young guy like that this year to make the team of not, it’ll still pay dividends for the future.”

Pulock has been a key reason to Brandon’s success on the power-play so far this season, with the club operating at a league-best 31.3%.

The 6-foot-1, 201 pound Pulock, who isn’t eligible for the NHL draft until 2013, has 11 of his 20 points this season with the man advantage.

“I think it’s been pretty good so far,” said Pulock, when asked how he would assess his season to date, “There’s still things to improve on, definitely I think defensive zone stuff, but so far it’s been good and hopefully it keeps getting better.”

Pulock, who attended Hockey Canada Under-18 Camp this past summer, will join teammates Mark Stone, Michael Ferland and Jordan Fransoo as Wheat Kings who’ll play for Team WHL in the Subway Series and, like his trio of teammates, he’ll play in Thursday’s game in Moose Jaw only.
