Etem Ends Wheat Kings' Win Streak

Emerson Etem scored his league-leading 23rd goal of the season 44 seconds into overtime as the Medicine Hat Tigers downed the Brandon Wheat Kings 4-3 on Saturday night.

The result spoiled a good effort by the Wheat Kings, who overcame an early 2-0 deficit.

Hunter Shinkaruk scored twice in the opening eight minutes and 16 seconds for the Tigers, but Brandon battled back before the end of the first period on goals by Paul Ciarelli and Mark Stone, who tied the game 2-2 with 4.8 seconds left in the first period.

Ryan Pulock then gave the Wheat Kings a 3-2 lead with a power-play goal at 10:55 of the second period, and Brandon had the lead through 40 minutes and maintained that lead until Shinkaruk scored a power-play goal with 3:51 left in the third period.

The Wheat Kings' specialty team were hurtful Saturday, with the team unable to capitalize on two power-play chances in the third period that would have extended their lead to 4-2, and then taking back-to-back penalties late in the third period including a hit-from-behind minor to Rene Hunter that the Tigers capitalized on just five seconds into the man advantage.

The loss leaves Brandon with an 11-5-1-1 record and still in sole possession of first-place in the East Division with 24 points, one ahead of Saskatoon, two up on Regina and three ahead of Moose Jaw.

Chaff...Brandon's penalty-kill went 1-for-3 Saturday, and is 13-for-21 (61.9%) in the last five games. Overall, the Wheat Kings ranked 19th in the WHL this season with a 74.3% kill rate...Brandon Anderson stopped 31 shots in the Wheat Kings' net while Tyler Bunz made 32 saves for the Tigers...Medicine Hat's Cole Grbavac was assessed a charging major and game misconduct in the first period.
