Wheat Kings Set for Next Stop

There’s a lot more in play than just a regular season matchup on Friday night when the Brandon Wheat Kings visit the Medicine Hat Tigers (8:00 p.m., CKLQ).

The contest will mark the first time the two teams have met since the Tigers ousted the Wheat Kings in the first round of the Western Hockey League playoffs last April.

It also marks a sibling rivalry behind the bench, with Cory Clouston in his first season as the Wheat Kings’ head coach and Shaun Clouston in his second season at the helm of the Tigers.

The brothers have faced each other before as WHL coaches. In fact, the two went head-to-head five times during the 2002-2003 season, when Cory’s Kootenay Ice beat Shaun’s Tri-City Americans four times.

“I’m his biggest fan and hope for the best for him,” said Cory Clouston on CKLQ’s Coaches’ Corner earlier this week, “We’ve coached long enough, we’ve coached against each other several times. For me, it’s just another game on the schedule we’re trying to win and I know it’s the same for him.”

Friday’s game also features two of the WHL’s top scorers, with Brandon’s Mark Stone currently leading the league with 24 points and Medicine Hat’s Emerson Etem sitting third with 22 points.

And, of course, the Tigers and Wheat Kings are currently two of the top teams in the WHL’s Eastern Conference.

Medicine Hat (8-3-0-0) are tied with the Edmonton Oil Kings for first-place while Brandon (7-3-0-1) is just one point behind.

Chaff… a scoring change for Wednesday’s game has ‘officially’ given Darian Dziurzynski his hat-trick against Everett...Michael Ferland is one point shy of 100 for his WHL career entering Friday’s game. Ferland has 41 goals and 58 assists 128 career games entering Friday’s contest…the Wheat Kings have travelled 3,764 kilometres on their seven-game road trip entering Friday’s contest with Medicine Hat. The team is expected to have travelled close to 5,000 kilometres on their current road trip by the time they return to Brandon on Sunday.
