WHL to Honour McCrimmon, Belak, Rypien and Boogaard

The Western Hockey League will honour former Wheat King Brad McCrimmon and former WHL players Wade Belak, Rick Rypien and Derek Boogaard during the 2011-2012 season.

All WHL players will wear a special decal on their helmet, designed in memory of the former WHL players who all died this summer.

"It was very tragic summer. Our hearts go out to the family involved, and the many friends and teammates impacted throughout the Western Hockey League," said WHL Commissioner Ron Robison in an address posted on the WHL website, "We thought the appropriate way would be to recognize all four players through a decal on the helmet that will be displayed throughout the regular season."

In addition to the helmet decal, every WHL team will have a moment of silence prior to the start of their opening games of the season while the Wheat Kings will have a special video tribute to Brad McCrimmon prior to Friday's home opener against Moose Jaw.

McCrimmon, 52, perished when the plane carrying the Lokomotiv Taraslavl team he was coaching crashed in Russia earlier this month.

The Saskatoon Blades also having a brief memorial for Belak and McCrimmon. Still can't believe their gone. They were a big part of the Blades when they were here. Sympathies again to their families and friends.

Awesome to see it. Just pray that no other names or numbers have to be added to the stickers. Way to go WHL!
