White Edges Black in Wheat Kings' Intrasquad Game

Michael Ferland filled the net during Training Camp
The Brandon Wheat Kings brought the curtain down on their 2011 training camp Sunday with their annual intrasquad game.

Eric Roy scored the winner in a shootout as Team White beat Team Black 4-3.

Michael Ferland scored goals nine seconds apart in the third period for Team White, and seems destined to add even more offence to his game in his third season with the Wheat Kings.

"I just want to get some good chemistry with my linemates and see how things go," said Ferland after Sunday's contest, "I want to have a better year than I did last year, keep improving and get better as we go on."

Ferland notched 23 goals and 56 points in 56 regular season games with the Wheat Kings last season while adding four goals and six points in six playoff contest.

The Calgary Flames' draft pick is also expected to take on more of a leadership role in his third season with Brandon.

"I'm one of the older guys on the team this year," said Ferland, "I'll try to be a leader any way I can."

Jens Meilleur added a goal and two assists for Team White while Daniel Taillefer, Liam Gregor and Dominick Favreau scored the goals for Team Black.

As far as the goaltenders are concerned, Corbin Boes stopped all 13 shots he faced in the Team Black net while Jordan Papirny stopped 16 of 19 shots.

For Team White, Liam Liston stopped 14 of 15 shots while Tyler Fuhr blocked 11 of 13 shots.

Brandon can now look forward to their first pre-season game.

That'll come on Friday, when they host the Moose Jaw Warriors.

Chaff...F Brenden Walker (head), F Jason Swyripa (knee), F Bruno Mraz, D Brodie Melnychuk and G Curtis Honey were the players that didn't participate in Sunday's intrasquad game...the Wheat Kings are expected to trim their pre-season roster to around 30 players. That roster should be released by the hockey club on Sunday evening.
