Swyripa Looks to Fill Scoring Void

After losing five of their top eight scorers from last season, the Brandon Wheat Kings are looking for some new offensive weapons this year.

Shayne Wiebe, Matt MacKay and Scott Glennie are among the club's scoring stars from a year ago that have moved on to the professional ranks, leaving opportunities open for other returnees to fill the void.

Second-year centre Jason Swyripa hopes to be one player to fill a more offensive role after scoring nine goals and 22 points in 72 games a year ago.

"I think everyone is going to be able to contribute and, during the pre-season, we'll see if we're going well putting points up on the board," said Swyripa after Wednesday's practice, "No doubt, we're going to be a defensive team with all of our D-Men returning but I think everyone is going to chip in."

A year ago, Swyripa was battling to earn a roster spot with the Wheat Kings.

With that secured, the pre-season may not mean quite as much for the Calgary product but he's still taking it as seriously as he did last September.

"You're always trying to make a mark," said Swyripa, "I want to put on a good impression and make a difference either way.

The Wheat Kings see their first action of the pre-season Friday night when they host the Moose Jaw Warriors (7:30 p.m., Westman Communications Group Place).

Chaff...Brandon product Joel Edmundson will not be in the Warriors' lineup this weekend. The second round pick of St. Louis will be playing with other Blues' prospects at the Traverse City Prospects Tournament...Wheat Kings' season ticket pickup day is today (September 8th) from 9:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.
