'Coop' Impresses on Day One

Taylor Cooper
Left-winger Taylor Cooper was one of the rookies who impressed during the first day of the Brandon Wheat Kings' Rookie Camp.

The 5-foot-11, 174 pound Cooper was a sixth round pick of the Wheat Lings in the 2010 Western Hockey League Bantam Draft, and led the Alberta Minor Midget Hockey League in scoring last season with 36 goals and 79 points in 37 games with Sherwood Park.

"I just played well, played with good teammates and had a lot chemistry with the guys I played with," said Cooper after Wednesday's evening scrimmage, "It worked out well in the end."

This is Cooper's second training camp with the Wheat Kings and the 16-year old admits it's a little different than it was a year ago.

"It's a lot different now that I have a chance to make the team," said Cooper, "I just want to play hard and, hopefully, it happens."

Cooper's mannerisms on the ice remind some scouts of former Wheat King Peter Schaefer, who had a tremendous junior career including being named WHL Player of the Year in 1996-1997.

Rookie Camp continues Thursday with a scrimmage at 10:30 a.m. and then a rookie intrasquad game will take place at 6:00 p.m. at Westman Communications Group Place.
