Baudry Looks to Earn List Spot

Justin Baudry
The Brandon Wheat Kings have never had a first overall pick in training camp, but that has changed this year.

Defenceman Justin Baudry was chosen #1 by the Steinbach Pistons in the Manitoba Junior Hockey League draft in June after being passed over completely in the WHL Bantam Draft a month earlier.

Baudry is one of nine unlisted players skating at the Wheat Kings' Training Camp, and the 5-foot-9 1/2, 160 pounder says he isn't feeling out of place.

"That's just from hard work," said Baudry after Friday evening's scrimmage, "I've had good coaches over the years and they've really helped me out."

Baudry had 70 points in 44 games with the Southeast Blizzard last season and captained the squad to the Hockey Manitoba Bantam AA title.

This week, his goals are a little simpler.

"It's a big opportunity. I'm not drafted, but it just motivates me to work harder," said Baudry, "It's a good opportunity, and I'm trying to get listed."

When I asked Baudry why he chose to attend Brandon's camp, he explained his local ties to the Westman Area.

He was born in Brandon, and his father, Guy, manages the Hylife Foods plant in Neepawa.

Chaff...Jordan Fransoo had two goals including the winner with 12 seconds left as Team White beat Team Gold 6-5 in Friday night's scrimmage. Jens Meilleur and Tyler Coulter also had two goals each for Team White while Michael Ferland scored three times for Team Gold...2nd-year centre Jason Swyripa left Friday night's scrimmage after falling heavily into the end boards and may have suffered a hip injury.
