Papirny Thankful for Hockey Education

Brandon Wheat Kings' prospect Jordan Papirny had a busy summer.

The 15-year old Edmonton product was one of 42 players from across the country to attend the NHLPA's Allstate All-Canadian Mentorship Camp in Toronto the first week of August.

In addition to on-ice sessions, Papirney says it was an education in the world hockey.

"We had a seminar once a day. One was on nutrition, we had a ScotiaBank rep come in to talk to us, fitness stuff...they pretty much brought in everything," said Papirny Tuesday night as he registered for Wheat Kings' training camp, "We skated once a day too, and we got to meet guys like Jeff Skinner and Steven Stamkos. It was great, we could pretty much ask them anything."

The camp was led by former NHLer Gary Roberts, with Jason Spezza and Luke Schenn among the other current NHLers who helped out.

Papirny is among the 50 or so rookies set to hit the ice today at Brandon's 2011 training camp.

He was one of the club's two first round pick in the 2011 WHL Bantam Draft, and has the distinction of being the only goaltender ever chosen by Brandon in the first round.

The 5-foot-10,, 140 pound Papirny isn't eligible to play with the Wheat Kings on a full-time basis until 2012-2013 but he still wants to make a big impression this week.

"It'll be a lot of fun, I've got a good week ahead of me. I'm just going to have fun, work hard and show them what I can do," said Papirny, "My first WHL Camp I've been to so I want to take everything in."

Last season, Papirny had a 1.81 GAA and .918 SPCT in 1,060 minutes with the SSAC Southgate Lions of the Alberta Major Bantam Hockey League.
