Papirny, Prospects Hit Ice Friday

Player gather for instruction during Friday's
on-ice session at Wheat Kings' Prospects Camp.
Jordan Papirny is ready for the spotlight.

The 15-year old was the first goaltender ever drafted in the first round by Brandon Wheat Kings the 22-year history of the Western Hockey League Bantam Draft earlier this month.

Papirny was named the top goaltender in the Alberta Major Bantam Hockey League's North Division last season, with the Edmonton product recording a 1.81 goals against average and .918 save percentage with the SSAC Southgate Lions.

"It's great being selected in the first round, but I have to keep going and keep working hard to get to the next level," said Papirny following the first on-ice session at Brandon's Prospects Camp Friday, "Right now, I'm working on a lot of things but I'd say just staying at the top of the crease and following the puck into my body, stuff like that."

Papirny is one of eight players selected in this year's Bantam Draft participating in the camp and getting their first taste of the Wheat Kings' organization and the Western Hockey League.

The camp will include a seminar for 1996-born players and their parents on Saturday, but Papirny says his knowledge about the WHL is pretty good already.

"From all the tournaments we've been at, we've got a lot of information about the Western Hockey League and everything," says the 5-foot-11, 148 pound Papirny, "I pretty much knew what to expect coming in."

Papirny was one of 24 players to participate in the first on-ice session at Wheat Kings' Prospects Camp on Friday night.

The only other goaltender was Tyler Fuhr, Brandon's fourth round pick in 2010 and the winner of the AMBHL's North Division Goaltender of the Year award in 2009-2010.

Chaff...three players aren't participating at Prospects Camp because of injuries in goaltender Curtis Honey, defenceman Dylan Kuczek and forward Tim McGauley while nine others are in Winnipeg for Hockey Manitoba's POE Camps this weekend.
