Happy Anniversary Brandon! One Year Since Memorial Cup Started

One-year ago today, the 2010 Memorial Cup was getting underway with the arrival ceremony at CFB Shilo.

Ten days later, the highly successful event came to a close in somewhat disappointing fashion with the host Brandon Wheat Kings dropping a 9-1 decision to the Windsor Spitfires in the Championship Final.

However, those ten days will be etched in Wheat Kings' fans minds for a long period of time.

Jeff Cristall
"There were so many favourite moments. I think the spirit of the volunteers," says host committee chairman Jeff Cristall, "The volunteers around this place are absolutely amazing. They proved it for us at the Memorial Cup, and they're proving right now for us in this flood. I am so impressed with the volunteers in this city, it's just amazing."

The on-ice highlight for most was Jay Fehr's goal at 3:16 of overtime on May 21 that lifted Brandon to a 5-4 victory over the WHL Champion Calgary Hitmen, and gave the Wheat Kings a berth in the Memorial Cup Final for the first time since 1979.

"That was one of the most amazing moments that will ever occur at the Keystone may be the most amazing moment that will occur at thte Keystone Centre," adds Cristall, "Everything came together for that, it was unbelievable."

The highly successful event attracted more than 42 thousand fans to the eight games played, along with thousands more that took in some part of the event in the Memorial Cup Villege and at the Hockey House.

"We built off the legacy of a lot of really great events that came before us," says Cristall, "Hopefully, we laid the groundwork or continued the legacy so that a lot of great events can follow us."
