Puck Drops on 2011 Playoffs

The Brandon Wheat Kings opened the Western Hockey League playoffs with a 7-2 victory over the Medicine Hat Tigers on Friday night.

Ryan Pulock had two goals and two assists for Brandon in his WHL playoff debut, one of nine Wheat Kings who were playing their first WHL playoff game.

“I think they’re just nieve enough that it’s just another game where they were real good,” said Brandon GM/Coach Kelly McCrimmon on CKLQ’s post-game show, “I thought maybe a little bit tight in the first but barely noticeable and then as the game went on, they continue to do the things that they do.”

The line of Hampus Gustafsson, Paul Ciarelli and David Toews combined for three goals and six points, with each player contributing a goal and an assist to Brandon’s cause.

“I thought that line was tremendous, and not only did they score three goals, they did a lot of real good things,” said McCrimmon, “With the way Medicine Hat worked their matchups, they ended up with a lot of shifts against Hamilton’s line, a lot of shifts against Vey’s line and in terms of what you want to see from people stepping up at playoff time, I thought it was a great first game for all three of those players.”

Corbin Boes, also making his playoff debut, made 33 saves in the Brandon net with Brenden Walker and Shayne Wiebe also scoring for the Wheat Kings.

Game #2 of the series goes Saturday night in Medicine Hat (8:00 p.m. CDT, CKLQ).

Chaff…In addition to Pulock and Boes, others making their WHL playoff debut Friday for the Wheat Kings were Gustafsson, Toews, Rene Hunter, Eric Roy, Tyrel Seaman, Jason Swyripa and Jens Meilleur…Jacob DeSerres stopped 19 shots as Saint John blanked Andrew Hayes and the Cape Breton Screaming Eagles 10-0 Friday in Game #1 of their QMJHL first round series.
