Wheat Kings Strike Early, Beat Broncos

Matt MacKay opened the scoring just 12 seconds into the first period and the Brandon Wheat Kings never looked back in a 10-1 victory over the Swift Current Broncos on Friday night

Nine different players potted goals and 13 different players had points for Brandon with Scott Glennie netting two goals and an assist while David Toews, Hampus Gustafsson and Mark Stone had a goal and two assists each.

It was the continuation of an offensive outburst for the Wheat Kings, who have scored 69 goals in winning 10 of their last 13 games (5.3 goals per game).

"We were pretty balanced in terms of our chances, our goals, and the power-play did score a couple for us," said Brandon GM/Coach Kelly McCrimmon on CKLQ's post-game show, "We got some hard-working goals that we went and got pucks and got pucks to the net and we got some goals that were high-end skill plays."

On a night where virtually everyone got in on the act, Toews continued his strong second half and now has points in six of the last seven games, notching three goals and six assists in that span.

Toews has raised his game in the second half after an ankle injury sidelined him for a month in the first half and likely caused him some distress even after he returned to the lineup.

"I tried to battle through it but sometimes when you have nagging injury like that, the best thing is to rest and let it heal and I got that over the break at Christmas," says Toews, "I think I've just been building and building all year, and this is the time to keep building going into playofss...we need to keep pushing here."

The only thing that could have made the Wheat Kings' victory more perfect would have been if they'd been able to get Corbin Boes his first career shutout.

Unfortunately, Boes' bid for the goose egg ended when Adam Lowry scored with just 41 seconds left in regulation.

The victory was Brandon's fourth in a row and eighth straight on home ice.

It leaves the Wheat Kings three points up on eighth-place Prince Albert and two behind sixth-place Edmonton in the WHL's Eastern Conference.

The Raiders lost 6-3 on home ice to Moose Jaw Friday while the Oil Kings fell 4-3 in overtime to Kamloops.

The Wheat Kings and Broncos complete the home-and-home series and the season series on Saturday night in Swift Current (6:30 p.m., CKLQ).

Chaff...Swift Current captain Justin Dowling was a late scratch for the Broncos...It's been nearly a year to the day since Brandon scored 10 goals, beating Regina 10-2 on home ice on February 19, 2010...D Ryley Miller had two assists Friday, the first multi-point game of his WHL career, and has five assists and is +13 in the last 13 games...Brandon GM/Coach Kelly McCrimmon took the unusual step of having the officials escort rookie defenceman Spencer Galbraith to the dressing room with about six minutes to go when he wouldn't stop his verbalizing with Swift Current D Dalton Reum in the penalty box following their third period fight....Wheat Kings' prospect Ayrton Nikkel and Team B.C. captured the gold medal at the Canada Winter Games in Halifax on Friday, downing Quebec 7-4 in the final…D Garrett Bruce (Manitoba), F Tim McGauley (Saskatchewan) and D Max Powiada (Saskatchewan) were the other Wheat Kings' prospects to play at the Games.
