Wheat Kings Rally for Big Road Win

The Brandon Wheat Kings battled back from 4-1 and 5-2 deficits to defeat the Saskatoon Blades 7-6 on Friday night.

David Toews scored the winner with 3:12 left in the third period while Brenden Walker had two goals and an assist for Brandon.

“Obviously, a great win for our team especially considering we were down 5-2 to a team that had lost two games in regulation on home ice all year,” said Brandon GM/Coach Kelly McCrimmon on CKLQ’s post-game show, “Real good effort by our guys to stick with it.”

Matt MacKay added a goal and two assists to extend his point-scoring streak to 16 games while Jordan Fransoo, Michael Ferland and rookie Jens Meilleur also scored for the Wheat Kings.

Meilleur’s goal was a key one, as it came just 30 seconds after Saskatoon a taken a 6-5 lead in the third period.

“You could see that situation where, geez, we played hard, we came back, we made a bad mistake to give up the sixth goal and you almost started to wonder if it was going to be a good effort that went for not,” says McCrimmon, “That sixth goal instantly energized us and gave us a real lift.”

It was the sixth win in seven games and 12th in their last 16 contests for the Wheat Kings, and leaves Brandon one point behind sixth-place Edmonton and five ahead of eighth-place Prince Albert in the WHL’s Eastern Conference.

The Wheat Kings are back on home ice Saturday night as they entertain the Regina Pats (7:30 p.m., Westman Communications Group Place).

Chaff…Brandon went 1-for-5 on the power-play while going 3-for-4 on the penalty-kill…Brayden Schenn had one point, a shorthanded goal, for Saskatoon…former Wheat King Matt Calvert had his first career NHL hat-trick and an assist in helping the Columbus Blue Jackets to a 5-3 win over Phoenix on Friday night.
