Brandon Wins Battle of Kings

The Brandon Wheat Kings ran their home-ice winning streak to six games Saturday night a 6-4 victory over the Edmonton Oil Kings.

Matt MacKay notched his first career hat-trick for Brandon while Eric Roy, David Toews and Michael Ferland also scored for the Wheat Kings.

Roy also had an assist in the contest to give the rookie three goals and 13 points in 35 games this season including five points in the last six games.

Roy says knowing he'll be in the lineup every night has helped him over the last few weeks.

"It's getting my confidence up, knowing that I'll be playing most of the games for the rest of the season," says Roy, Brandon's first round pick in the 2009 WHL Bantam Draft, "It should be a challenge, I have a lot of responsibility now."

The Wheat Kings took control of Saturday's game by scoring three unanswered second period goals to take a 4-1 lead to the break.

Edmonton got to within two before Brandon's Michael Ferland scored with 7:42 left to give the Wheat Kings what looked to be a comfortable 5-2 lead.

However, the Oil Kings made things interesting with late goals by Rhett Rachinski and T.J. Foster, who completed his hat-trick with 2:24 left.

Despite the tightness at the end, Brandon GM/Coach Kelly McCrimmon says he wasn't overly concerned.

"It's disappointing that that happened yet and yet, you go through how it happened, they had a power-play goal, they had the shorthanded goal and they had a 5-on-5 goal," says McCrimmon, "It was never a case where we were hemmed in our end."

The victory has Brandon's sixth straight on home ice and gave the Wheat Kings a little breathing room in the WHL's Eastern Conference.

Brandon are still in seventh-place, three point back of the sixth-place Oil Kings and three up on both Swift Current and Prince Albert.
