Brandon Collects Fifth Straight Win

The Brandon Wheat Kings ran their winning streak to a season-high five games Saturday night with a 6-5 victory over the Swift Current Broncos.

Shayne Wiebe scored twice and Mark Stone had a goal and three assists for the Wheat Kings, who jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the opening period before allowing the Broncos to creep back into the contest.

“The goals we scored tonight we fantastic goals. I thought guys made some great plays and it’s not very often that you’re up 5-0 in the midway point of the first period, on the road,” said Brandon GM/Coach Kelly McCrimmon on CKLQ’s post-game show, “We just didn’t do a good job with the lead but, fortunately, we were still able to take two points out of the game.”

Matt MacKay, Scott Glennie and David Toews also scored for the Wheat Kings, with Toews’ goal with 6:17 left in the third period proving to be the winner after Swift Current had scored four consecutive goals to make it 5-4.

The victory allowed Brandon to sweep the home-and-home series and give themselves some breathing room over the Broncos in the Eastern Conference playoff race.

“We were five points ahead of Swift Current heading into the weekend, and we were going to be anywhere from one point to nine points ahead when the weekend was over,” says McCrimmon, “The way it turned out, we’re now nine points ahead so it does give us some separation.”

Brandon has now won a season-high five straight games and 11 of their past 14, leaving them one point back of sixth-place Edmonton and three ahead of eighth-place Prince Albert in the WHL’s Eastern Conference.

The Wheat Kings are now idle until Wednesday, when they pay a visit to the Saskatoon Blades.

Chaff…the game was delayed for about 14 minutes when a pane of glass shattered just 37 seconds into the first period…F Michael Ferland and D Spencer Galbraith both left the game in the first period for Brandon with undisclosed injuries…Matt MacKay extended his point streak to 14 games, the longest current streak in the WHL, and now has goals in seven straight games…Stone’s performance gives him 13 points in the last three games.
