Wheat Kings Fall in Shootout

The Brandon Wheat Kings were unable to narrow the gap between themselves and eighth-place in the WHL’s Eastern Conference on Saturday night as they dropped a 3-2 shootout decision to the Prince Albert Raiders.

Ryan Pulock sent the game to extra time by scoring his fourth of the season with 7.2 seconds left in regulation but the Wheat Kings will unable to complete the comeback from a 2-0 first period deficit with a victory, falling to 0-and-5 in shootouts this season.

“We scored in the last minute with the goaltender out on the road so that’s a good point any time you can tie a game that late,” said Brandon GM/Coach Kelly McCrimmon on CKLQ’s post-game show, “It’s disappointing game to not get the second point because it’s so meaningful with the Conference standings.”

Mark McNeill and Jordan Rowley scored first period goals for the Raiders, who outshot Brandon 16-12 in the opening 20 minutes.

Scott Glennie scored for the Wheat Kings to cut into the Prince Albert lead 7:57 into the second period before Pulock’s tying goal sent the game to extra time.

With Ryley Miller out of the Brandon lineup with a wirst injury, the Wheat Kings dressed five rookie defencemen on Saturday and, as a group, they proved to be equal to the task.

“I think they did a good job,” says McCrimmon, “That’s a real good test to go on the road with five rookie defencemen and a rookie goaltender and hold you opponent to two goals.”

Corbin Boes stopped 33 shots in the Brandon net but struggled in the shootout, allowing four goals on six Raider attempts.

Matt MacKay, Scott Glennie and Mark Stone scored in the shootout for Brandon.

Chaff…former Wheat King Matt Calvert scored his first NHL goal Saturday in Columbus’ 6-4 loss to the Los Angeles Kings, scoring the Blue Jackets’ first goal at 13:30 of the 2nd period…in addition to Miller, Brandon also scratched F Brayden Schenn (shoulder), F Mark Mieritz (healthy), F Wheaton King (healthy) and F Jens Meilleur (healthy)…Brandon went 0-for-4 on the power-play while the Raiders were 1-for-3.
