Wheat Kings Close Out Strong

The Brandon Wheat Kings closed out the first half of the Western Hockey League schedule Saturday night with a 6-1 victory over the Moose Jaw Warriors.

Scott Glennie notched his third career hat-trick and first since November 22, 2008 while linemate Brenden Walker had a goal and an assist and Michael Ferland contributed three assists.

“There’s a bit of everything on that line and Mike, especially, is still just getting his feet underneath him with the time that he missed and as he gets better, it’s only going to help that line,” said Brandon GM/Coach Kelly McCrimmon on CKLQ’s post-game show, “Great for Scott to go into the break with a hat-trick and that’s going to give him confidence moving forward.”

Spencer Galbraith, with the first goal of his Western Hockey League career, and Shayne Wiebe also scored for Brandon, who led 1-0 and 3-0 at the period breaks.

Saturday’s marked just the fifth time in the last 13 games the Wheat Kings had scored first, which is obviously an important aspect of the game.

“Big different for our team when we score first, and we haven’t been doing it consistently,” says McCrimmon, “Especially on the road, and even magnified in this building, the first goal is very important.”

Liam Liston built on his 42-save effort versus Prince Albert last Sunday by stopping 24 shots for the Wheat Kings including 16 in the third period.

Brandon finishes the first half with points in five consecutive games (2-0-0-3) and with a 13-19-1-4 record overall.

The Wheat Kings are tied with Lethbridge for ninth-place in the Eastern Conference, one point behind Prince Albert and three behind seventh-place Edmonton.

Brandon’s next action is December 28th, when they open a three-game Alberta road trip in Red Deer.
