Rebels Power Past Wheat Kings

The Brandon Wheat Kings ended a two-game Alberta road trip with a 5-2 loss to the Red Deer Rebels on Saturday night.

Andrej Kudrna had two goals and an assist for the Rebels as they handed Brandon their ninth consecutive loss.

The Wheat Kings found themselves down 3-0 after the first period but outshot the Rebels 11-6 in the opening 20 minutes.

“I thought our first period was our best period,” said Brandon GM/Coach Kelly McCrimmon on CKLQ’s post-game show, “We played real well, we only gave up six shots and, territorially, we had a lot of time in their zone, real good pace to our game and played real well.”

Brett Ferguson, Matthew Dumba and John Persson also scored for the Rebels while Brayden Schenn had a goal and an assist in his return to the Wheat Kings’ lineup.

Liam Liston stopped four of eight shots before being lifted after the Rebels’ fourth goal early in the second period.

“I thought we were the better team in a lot of regards,” adds McCrimmon, “I thought that our team played well, we were physical, we were much better defensively than we have been and we just didn’t get a good start in goal from Liam…he had a tough night and really fought the puck.”

Corbin Boes came on to stop 16 of 17 shots the rest of the way for Brandon while Scott Glennie had the other goal for the Wheat Kings.

Brandon is now idle until Wednesday, when they open a four-game home stand by hosting the Everett Silvertips.

Chaff…Red Deer went 3-for-6 on the power-play while Brandon was 2-for-6 with the man advantage…rookie Brandon F Tyrel Seaman left in the game in the first period with what appeared to be a shoulder injury.
