Freshmen Year Learning Experience for Swyripa

It's been an interesting rookie season for Brandon Wheat Kings' centre Jason Swyripa.

The 17-year old leads all true rookies on the Wheat Kings with six goals and 13 points in 32 games.

However, Swyripa says it's been an up and down year so far.

"You have to take the positive out of the situation. There's been a lot of good things going on with the team," says Swyripa, "We're building, and we're getting stronger so you can't complain about that."

The MVP of the prestigious Mac's Midget Tournament while with the UFA Bisons last season, Swyripa says he's learned as much off the ice as on the ice in his first year in the Western Hockey League.

"It's a lot of work. You have to put a great commitment into stretching, cool-down, pre-game preparations, eating, what you put into your body, how you fuel it...everything like that," says Swyripa, "And, just work ethic. No matter what, you have to be working hard, shift-in, shift-out, night-in, night-out, you have to be working hard."

The Wheat Kings open a four-game home stand Wednesday night as they entertain the Everett Silvertips (7:00 p.m., Westman Communications Group Place).

It'll be a homecoming and a good-bye for centre Brayden Schenn Wednesday.

It's Schenn's first home game since being returned by the Los Angeles Kings last week, but it'll also be his last home game before departing for the Canadian Junior Team's Selection Camp in Toronto.

Brandon will be out to break a nine-game losing streak on Wednesday.

Chaff...bad news for two Wheat Kings' rookies. F Tyrel Seaman is out for 2-3 weeks after suffering a strained shoulder Saturday in Red Deer while D Spencer Galbraith is out indefinitely with a concussion...Brandon's penalty-kill is 13-for-24 (54.2%) in their last six games...Wheat Kings' G Liam Liston prefers home-cooking. He is 6-4 with a 2.60 GAA and .916 SPCT at home this season, but 3-7-1 with a 4.45 GAA and .861 SPCT on the road…F Shayne Wiebe has 11 of his 15 goals this season on home ice.
