Wheat Kings Dump Tigers

Mark Stone and Shayne Wiebe scored a pair of goals each as the Brandon Wheat Kings beat the Medicine Hat Tigers 5-2 on Thursday afternoon.

Michael Ferland also scored for the Wheat Kings, who tallied three times on the power-play and finished the afternoon 3-for-5 with the man advantage.

In addition, Brandon killed off all four of Medicine Hat’s power-play chances including a 26 second 5-on-3 in the third period.

“We didn’t have a lot of penalty-kill situation until the later stages of the game and then we got ourselves into penalty trouble and were able to do a good job,” said Brandon GM/Coach Kelly McCrimmon on CKLQ’s post-game show, “Our power-play was good tonight. We scored three times and had a lot of other opportunities that we generated some really good chances.”

Both of Stone’s goals were power-play markers, giving him eight on the year which ties him for second-most in the Western Hockey League.

Wiebe, meanwhile, has points in four straight games and seven of the last eight, recording five goals and nine points in that span.

“Everyone was really excited to play today,” said Wiebe, “We had done a little bit of a switch in our forecheck there and I think it’s a little more demanding for everyone but everyone has bought in and I think it showed today.”

Liam Liston stopped 34 shots in the Brandon net, allowing just a pair of Hunter Shinkaruk goals 12 seconds apart in the third period when the Wheat Kings were already in front 5-0.

Brandon improved to 9-11-0-1 with the victory, and moved into a tie with the Tigers for seventh-place in the Eastern Conference.

The Wheat Kings are back in action Friday when they host the Lethbridge Hurricanes (7:30 p.m., Westman Communications Group Place).
