'Soft Call' Leads to OT Winner

Killian Hutt scored a power-play goal 4:27 into overtime as the Swift Current Broncos defeated the Brandon Wheat Kings 3-2 on Wednesday night.

In a game that saw just five minor penalties called, including three against Brandon, the winning goal came with just eight seconds left in a highly questionable cross-checking penalty to Brandon defenceman Rene Hunter in overtime.

Adam Lowry scored just 1:25 into the first period to give the Broncos an early 1-0 advantage but Brandon tied the game with 1:16 left in the opening frame on Michael Ferland’s fourth of the season.

Justin Dowling once again gave Swift Current a one-goal lead 2:56 into the second period, a lead that would last until Ryan Pulock’s power-play goal 7:05 into the third period tied the game 2-2.

“I thought we played well, right from puck drop, really, we were pretty solid right throughout the night” said Brandon GM/Coach Kelly McCrimmon on CKLQ’s post-game show, “The one thing that we don’t do real well right now is score goals. Certainly, we had a lot more scoring chance than two goals in total offence would lead you to believe, but I thought our team played well.”

Scott Glennie finished the night with a pair of assists while Corbin Boes stopped 31 of 34 shots in the Brandon net.

“The disappointment in the overtime loss for me is almost as much for him not getting rewarded on a strong effort and getting his first win because he did make some good saves for us,” said McCrimmon.

The overtime loss did allow Brandon to pick up a single point, moving to 11-15-1-1 on the season.

The Wheat Kings next chance to break a five-game winless streak is Friday night when they pay a visit to the Moose Jaw Warriors.

Chaff…Former Wheat King Travis Hamonic made his NHL debut Wednesday, seeing 19:57 of icetime and finishing pointless with a –1 rating in the New York Islanders 4-3 overtime loss to Columbus…in an American Hockey League battle between last year’s Wheat King co-captains, Brayden Schenn’s Manchester Monarchs downed Matt Calvert’s Springfield Falcons 3-2 on Wednesday night. Both Schenn and Calvert were held off the scoresheet…former Brandon coach Bob Lowes guested during the second intermission of the Wheat Kings’ broadcast on CKLQ on Wednesday night. I’ll write up some of Lowes’ comments and have more on what the club’s all-time winningest coach is up to later this week.
