Pats Dump Wheat Kings

Chandler Stephenson scored the first two goals of his Western Hockey League career, helping the Regina Pats to a 4-1 victory over the Brandon Wheat Kings on Sunday night.

Carter Ashton and Jordan Weal also scored for the Pats while Brenden Walker had the lone goal for Brandon.

The Wheat Kings had 15 shots on Regina goaltender Matt Hewitt in the first period and emerged from the opening 20 minutes in a 1-1 tie but it was tough going for Brandon from that point on.

“I felt reasonably satisfied with where we were heading into the second period but I thought from the second period on, we really beat ourselves,” said Brandon GM/Coach Kelly McCrimmon on CKLQ’s post-game show, “I didn’t think we played very well for the final 40 minutes.”

Hewitt finished with 32 saves while Liam Liston stopped 28 shots in the Brandon net.

Weal’s power-play goal 3:52 into the second period gave Regina a 2-1 lead and then Stephenson gave the Pats their insurance, scoring with 3:21 left in the second period and adding the Pats second power-play goal of the night in the third period.

However, it was the third Regina goal that made it 3-1 after two that really hurt Brandon.

“I thought that was a goal that really had a lot of meaning in the overall outcome of the game,” said McCrimmon, “I think there were a lot of areas of our game that we weren’t sharp and we weren’t smart. Whether that’s three in three nights or whatever the reasons are for that, I just didn’t think we played a smart game at times.”

Sunday’s loss ruined an opportunity for the Wheat Kings to sweep the 3-in-3 weekend, but gaining four of a possible six points is still something positive.

“I think the weekend was good for us,” says McCrimmon, “I thought we did a lot of good things over the course of our two home games and certainly disappointed, certainly, with our game in here (Sunday) night.”

The loss drops Brandon’s overall record to 8-11-0-1.

The Wheat Kings return to action on Remembrance Day afternoon, when they host the Medicine Hat Tigers.

Chaff…Wheat Kings' F Mark Stone saw his six-game goal-scoring streak snapped on Sunday...Brandon went 1-for-4 on the power-play while Regina was 2-for-4…attendance at the Brandt Centre was 3,369, and the Pats are down roughly 400 fans per game as compared to last season.
