Third Period Leads Slips Away, Again

The Brandon Wheat Kings let another third period lead slip away on Saturday night.

Moose Jaw scored three goals in the final 3:07 of the third period to skate away with a 4-2 victory over the Wheat Kings.

MacKenzie Royer, who was making his Warriors' debut, scored the game-tying goal at 16:53 of the third period and Quinton Howden gave Moose Jaw their first lead by notching his second goal of the game with 1:12 left.

Scott Glennie and Hampus Gustafsson had scored in the first period for the Wheat Kings while Sam Fioretti scored Calgary's fourth goal into an empty net.

It's the second time this season the Wheat Kings have gone winless during a three-game home stand and more frustrating this time around is the fact the club led and was tied going into the third period in each of their home contests this week.

The club has been outscored 8-0 by their opposition in the third period in their last three games.

"We need to buckle down in the third period, especially in our rink," said Brandon forward Mark Stone on CKLQ's post-game show, "Teams should come in here with the mindset that we're going to be battling hard for the full 60 and we haven't gone that the past couple of games."

Liam Liston made 31 saves for Brandon while Thomas Heemskerk stopped 40 shots in the Moose Jaw net including 31 over the first 40 minutes.

"We had chances to pull away in the second period and didn't and chances in the third period to add to our lead and didn't," said Brandon GM/Coach Kelly McCrimmon, "We started the third period with some great opportunities on our power-play and just didn't get that next goal that leaves your opponent hanging around."

The Wheat Kings finished 0-for-4 on the power-play while the club was 3-for-3 on the penalty-kill.

Brandon is now 6-6-0-0 on home-ice this season and 11-14-0-1 overall.

Next action for the Wheat Kings is Tuesday, when they open a three-game road trip in Medicine Hat.

Chaff...Brandon products Joel Edmundson and Brayden Cuthbert both played their first WHL games with the Warriors back in their hometown Saturday night. Both were held off the scoresheet...Glennie's first period goal extending his goal-scoring streak to five games.
