Wheat Kings' Scoring Woes Continue

Mark Friesen stopped 30 shots to lead the Swift Current Broncos to a 4-1 victory over the Brandon Wheat Kings on Saturday night.

Stepan Novotny and Taylor Vause had a goal and an assist each for Swift Current while Brad Hoban and Cody Eakin notched power-play goals for the Broncos.

“I thought we played well right from the outset, and had good momentum and good energy on the bench,” said Brandon GM/Coach Kelly McCrimmon on CKLQ’s post-game show, “I thought that we used our guys well, gave everyone opportunity and, as a result, played the game with lots of pace. You have to keep perspective on some of these things but I thought our effort was very good.”

Mark Stone scored the lone goal for the Wheat Kings, a power-play marker with 4:03 left in the second period that cut the Broncos’ lead to 2-1 at that point, but it was another game where Brandon was left scratching their heads about the inability to capitalize on scoring chances.

Darren Bestland hit a goal-post on a late first period power-play, Wheaton King was denied on a second period breakaway and, even with the extra attacker late in the third period, Hampus Gustafsson was robbed on a point-blank chance by Friesen.

Brandon has down dented the twine just 11 times during their six-game losing streak.

“We have had trouble scoring,” says McCrimmon, “I don’t think we could have asked for a better start, I thought each period we were the better team but we’re just not finding the back of the net, which makes it pretty tough.”

Liam Liston made his first road start of the season and finished the night with 22 saves.

It’s the first six-game losing streak for the Wheat Kings since December 2-13, 2006.

Brandon’s next action is Wednesday, when they open their B.C. Division road trip in Prince George.

Chaff…The Broncos were 2-for-4 on the power-play for the second straight night, meaning Brandon is 12-for-18 (66.7%) on the penalty-kill over their last four games…Jacob De Serres’ QMJHL career got off to a great start Saturday. De Serres (below) stopped 21 shots in his debut for Saint John, recording the shutout in the Sea Dogs 2-0 win over Rouyn-Noranda.
