Wheat Kings Lose First

The Brandon Wheat Kings have tasted defeat for the first time this season.

The Wheat Kings had opened the season with four consecutive victories for the first time since 1994 but saw that streak end on Saturday night with a 3-1 loss to the Prince Albert Raiders.

Sebastien Svendsen had a pair of second period goals and assisted on Brandon Herrod’s empty-net goal late in the third period to pace the Raiders’ offence while Wheaton King had the lone goal for Brandon, coming at 12:56 of the third period.

The Wheat Kings got off to a poor start in the contest, being outshot 11-3 by the midway mark of the first period and 14-10 overall.

“We’ve had scoreless first periods where we’ve played well, and it’s helped us later in the game,” said Brandon GM/Coach Kelly McCrimmon on CKLQ’s post-game show, “I think tonight, even though we didn’t pay for it on the scoreboard in the first period, we didn’t play well enough to start the game and, as a result, it kind of felt we were chasing a lot of the night.”

One of the highlights for the Wheat Kings Saturday was the play of rookie goaltender Corbin Boes, who made 44 saves in his WHL debut.

“I thought he was tremendous,” said McCrimmon, “He should be disappointed in his teammates because he did everything that you would want a goaltender to do on the road to give his team a chance to win and we just didn’t respond well.”

Jamie Tucker made 28 saves in goal for Prince Albert, as the Raiders improved to 2-3-0-0 on the season.

Brandon completes their three-games in three-nights weekend on Sunday, when they visit the Saskatoon Blades (7:05 p.m., CKLQ).

Chaff…Brandon’s scratches included F Michael Ferland (knee) for the second straight game…D Darren Bestland sat out for the first time this season as fellow 20-year old Mark Schneider made his season debut. Schneider and fellow 20-year old David Toews both finished the game with –3 ratings…Brandon went 5-for-5 on the penalty-kill, leaving the Wheat Kings still perfect on the season (22-for-22).
